Kidstock

August 2011

Greetings!

Happy August, everyone!  As summer officially gets hotter and hotter, the deals at Kidstock are getting better and better.  Please use our coupons below to get some great deals on summer AND winter stuff (think ahead, people!)  We still have bathing suits and fun summer clothing on our racks, and as we gear up for fall you will find lots of everyday school gear.
We also have some small environmental changes happening at Kidstock -- it's all about the baby steps.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
The Battery Bucket
Parents who have kids usually have toys.  Some toys have batteries.  When the batteries no longer work, parents generally replace them.  It's easy, no muss, no fuss.

However, while most of us know that placing dead batteries in our regular trash is a no-no, we still do it.  We figure it's just a little battery, what could it hurt, it's too much work to dispose of dead batteries in an environmentally friendly way.

Do you know what happens to batteries disposed of in regular trash?  Nothing good, that's for sure!  In Los Angeles, that trash gets transported to a dump, where large machines tamp down the hundreds of tons of garbage that come in each day.  When a large machine rolls over a dead battery, what gets squished out of that battery is nothing that you'd want in your water supply.  The squished out battery innards (it may be alkaline, mercury, cadmium, or worse, especially in rechargeable batteries) can, in older dumps, leach down towards the water table.  Who wants that?!?

Bottom line, disposing of dead batteries requires some forethought and planning.  It's not always easy to swing by an e-waste facility, even if you can find one.  However, Mother Earth, and the water supply, will always be grateful when you tread less lightly and make choices that benefit our environmental health.  That's why at Kidstock we will always ask you if you want/need a bag with your purchase -- we are happy to supply one (usually a repurposed one) if you need it.  Fully half of our customers use their own bag or use no bag at all -- very impressive!

And it's also why Kidstock now has a Battery Bucket!  You are welcome to bring your dead household batteries with you when shopping and Kidstock will take care of e-cycling for you.  Please put a piece of tape over the positive end of the battery (especially rechargeable ones), and dump it in our bucket.  What a great way to model environmental consciousness for your children, too.

Our bucket is intended for regular household/toy batteries.  No car batteries, please.  Kidstock looks forward to seeing you soon --  with a lighter environmental footprint.

Bag Break

We will not be accepting any clothing bags from customers August 1 through September 30.  We have such an overabundance of inventory that we need a chance to catch up and better organize what we currently have.

The only exceptions will be toys, boys sizes 4 and 5, ski bibs/ski wear, and small furniture.

We feel blessed to have so much; however in order to make our customers' shopping experience better and more organized, we need to put you on hold for a few months

Messy August Boredom Buster

Food Stamping

So if you have already used your fruit coupon above, this is a great project to do with your kids while you are cooking nearby.  Messy, fun, and thematic!

Need:

Sponge

Paper plate

Tempera paint

variety of fruit and veggies, cut up (apples, broccoli, peppers, strawberries, potato)

paper

Dip the sponge in the tempera paint and put it on a paper plate with the painted side up.  Give kids a variety of cut up fruits and veggies (sliced or cut in half).  Press the fruit or veggie onto the paint on the sponge, and then press on to paper to make a print.
