Welcome to Kidstock!
Greetings!
It's May and we are so happy that spring is really here. . . sort of. We are hanging more shorts and fewer sweaters, and not taking ANY raincoats off the racks. We have plenty of fleece and light jackets in the store, which are right next to the bathing suits. We promise that you are not the only parent purchasing long sleeves and shorts at the same time.
We've had a lot of new friends sign up for our newsletter this month, so if this is your first time reading, welcome!
Happy May, everyone! We look forward to seeing you soon. |
Reminders
* We are currently accepting drop-offs of all types. Please remember that during July and August we will not be accepting clothing (but we will take toys and small furniture). We use this time to reorganize our existing backlogged inventory. Even though we use the summer months to organize, we also hang new items from our backstock every day, so you will always find something interesting when you come in.
When dropping off, you do not need to worry about whether the clothing is seasonally appropriate or not. Please do worry, however, about the clothing being clean, not ripped or stained, and games and toys being complete and working. If you would not buy it in its current condition, neither will we.
Please do not overstuff your bags/bins! Overstuffed bags often tear, and clothing can get dirty, stained, or lost. Bags with carefully folded clothing get more store credit than overstuffed bags with carelessly treated items.
* Shopping tip: If you are shopping without your kids, bring clothing with you that currently fits them. That way you can compare length and width with more confidence.
* Kidstock's return policy has changed. You may still return items within one week as long as the tags are attached and you have the original receipt. However, we will no longer be giving cash or credit card returns. All returns, no matter how the items were purchased, will be for store credit only.
* Patootie Cakes are available in the store. You can grab and go with these already wrapped diaper cakes -- perfect for a new baby hospital visit or as a shower gift. These come from an outside vendor, so store credit may not be used for your purchase. To view a picture, go to www.patootiecakes.com. You can specialty order from the site and pick up at Kidstock to avoid shipping and handling charges.
* We want to wish all our customers a very Happy Mother's Day (Sunday, May 12)!
* Kidstock will be closed Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day. |
It's In The Bag
The Washington, DC-based Institute For Local Self-Reliance calculates that, on average, out of every $10 spent buying things, $1 (10%) goes for packaging that is thrown away. Packaging represents about 65% of household trash. They have also calculated that about one-third of an average dump is made up of packaging material.
In a very informal and not-at-all scientific survey, Kidstock estimates that approximately half our customers who make a purchase either decline a bag at checkout or bring their own bag when shopping. Kidstock is proud of our customers who take their environmental stewardship seriously, and we are really honored to be part of the light environmental footprint made by being part of the community that chooses recycled clothing as a part of its overall commitment to saving both money and the planet.
For our part, Kidstock will continue to re-purpose gift bags, bags from other stores, and recycled/recyclable plastic sacks for our customers who don't have a bag readily available. At Kidstock, every day is Earth Day, and we salute our customers who celebrate that with us.

Messy, Messy Edible Finger Paint Recipe
Ingredients
1 14oz can Sweetened Condensed Milk
2 to 4 Tbs. Cornstarch or less. 2 is probably enough, but you have to gauge the thickness as you are making it.
1 pack flavored drink mix (Kool-Aid). This makes the color super vibrant!
Thickish cardstock -- regular paper will get too soggy. A sheet of plastic works well too.
Directions
Pour sweetened condensed milk into a medium sauce pan. Stir in cornstarch.
Cook on medium-low heat until well combined. Add flavored drink mix and stir well.
Remove from heat and let cool before playing and painting.
This should be safe and fairly tasty to eat, although not a great choice if you are a low-sugar family.
Also, this is super messy -- hence the title! Have your clean up gear ready to go at the same time you have your activity going.
