Kidstock
May 2012
Welcome to Kidstock!

Greetings!

It's May and we are so happy that spring is really here.  We are hanging more shorts and fewer sweaters, and it really feels like summer is quickly approaching.   Of course, closer to the coastline it's still pretty cool at night, so we will keep plenty of fleece and light jackets in the store.

We've had a lot of new friends sign up for our newsletter this month, so if this is your first time reading, welcome!

Happy May, everyone!  We look forward to seeing you soon.

Reminders

*  We are currently accepting bags/boxes of clothing, toys, and small furniture.  Please remember that during July and August we will not be accepting clothing (but we will take toys and small furniture).  We use this time to reorganize our existing inventory.

*  Kidstock cannot accept torn or dirty merchandise.  Please see our archived newsletter from last month.  We listed some creative ideas of what to do with your way-past-wearing clothing.

*  Dead batteries -- a big thank you to all our customers who have made use of our dead battery bucket at the back of our store.  Every battery that does not go into the landfill is a wonderful commitment to our planet.

*  We want to wish all our customers a very Happy Mother's Day (Sunday, May 13)!

*  Kidstock will be closed Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day.

It's In The Bag

In a very informal and not at all scientific survey, Kidstock estimates that approximately half its customers who make a purchase either decline a bag at checkout or bring their own bag when shopping.  Suffice to say, we are VERY impressed with you!

As of the beginning of April, the Los Angeles City Council was considering a proposed ban on plastic bags with handles.  It seems as if most of the world (including Santa Monica, Malibu, and LA County) has already adapted itself to carrying recycled or cloth bags.

While we cannot tell you how this debate will play out for our city, we can say that Kidstock customers are clearly among the trend setters of this movement.  For our part, Kidstock will continue to repurpose gift bags, bags from other stores, and recyclable plastic sacks for our customers who don't have a bag readily available.  Kidstock applauds you for continuing to set the green bar high by buying recycled clothing and using your recycled bag to carry it home.

Yo' Mama!

We love our mom customers!  (And our dad customers and our aunt and uncle customers and our grandma/grandpa/godparent customers -- you get the idea.)  In honor of Mom's Day, get 20% off any one item this month.  In order to use this coupon, you must be a mom, have a mom, or know a mom.  Happy Mother's Day!

No need to print this coupon.  Just mention verbal code "Mom coupon" at checkout to get your discount.  One discount per family per day, please.

Book Nook Look

Take a look in our book nook and you can see our problem -- we have a lot of books!  Choose any book and get another for a penny.  You can do this with as many books as you like.  Your less expensive choices will be the 1 cent books, of course.   And yes, you can combine this coupon with the Mom coupon!

No need to print this coupon.  Just mention at checkout that you want the "Book Deal" and we'll be happy to ring it up this way.

As always, we are grateful for your kind comments and friend/family referrals.  Your word of mouth is our best tool for getting the word out about Kidstock.  We are always open to your comments and constructive criticism, so please let us know what you are thinking.  Have a great month!

Sincerely,
Melna and Leslie

Messy, Messy Edible Finger Paint Recipe

Ingredients

1 14oz can Sweetened Condensed Milk

2 to 4 Tbs. Cornstarch or less.  2 is probably enough, but you have to gauge the thickness as you are making it.

1 pack flavored drink mix (Kool-Aid).  This makes the color super vibrant!

Thickish cardstock -- regular paper will get too soggy.  A sheet of plastic works well too.

Directions

Pour sweetened condensed milk into a medium sauce pan. Stir in cornstarch.

Cook on medium-low heat until well combined. Add flavored drink mix and stir well.

Remove from heat and let cool before playing and painting.

This should be safe and fairly tasty to eat, although not a great choice if you are a low-sugar family.

Also, this is super messy -- hence the title!  Have your clean up gear ready to go at the same time you have your activity going.
