Kid Friendly and Very Local
We've written about this before and we'll say it again -- seriously, how kid-friendly is our little stretch of Pico between Beverly Glen and Overland? You could roam all day and not run out of fun! Every business listed below either caters to kids or welcomes them warmly. Here is your itinerary with the kids for a perfect day on Pico:
First, breakfast at John O'Groats with some serious coffee and even better breakfast. When you are done, you can wander across the street to Rancho park golf course and hit a few balls in their little parking lot grass area. After that, wander west down the block and visit Fire Station #92 where, if the fire people are not busy, they are always happy to say hi.
By now it's lunchtime, and you'll have to choose between Marty's for a quick veggie burger (yes, they do have them!) or Food. You will probably choose Food for an organic/homemade soup and sandwich. (It's cold outside. You'll have to save Marty's for a warmer day.) After finishing up with a fancy coffee, you stroll with the kids in tow to the karate studio where you participate in a trial class or watch the students go through their paces. Crossing the street, you then head for Children's Book World where you can wander around or sit in a cozy corner and read to your kids.
When quiet time is over, you head west again and find yourself at Kidstock! Tremendously fun shopping ensues! Your next stop is Studio R for a bit of dancing or painting, then the bead store for some rainy day supplies, and then Adam's Music for a quick tuba lesson.
Still have energy? Great! Head for F&S Fabric and pick up some remnants for your kids' art supply stash -- if you get lucky you might find a piece big enough for fort building!
By now it's time for dinner. Do you opt for the Main Course, Louise's, Studio 6, the Chinese restaurant, Dominos, Subway, McD's, or Steingarten? It's no contest. You pick up a dozen mini cupcakes at Buttercake Bakery and head for home, still full from lunch and tired from a great day of supporting small businesses in your local neighborhood. |

Reminders
* We are accepting bags with clothing, toys, and small furniture items. Items do not need to be seasonal. You may drop off at any time, although we do ask that you limit yourself to 1-2 bags at a time. Please remember that we do not accept stained or torn items. Games/puzzles must be complete. **Heads up notice: we will not be accepting drop-offs this year during July and August. Plan ahead!
* Kidstock will be open regular hours on MLK day, January 16.
* A great tip worth repeating: If you are shopping without your kids, bring a pair of pants with you that fit him/her well. That way you can measure the length/waist against something in the store and have a better idea of sizing.
* Our immediate neighbor, the Design Studio, is closing up shop and moving their gallery further west on Pico. We are sad to see them go, but we are hoping someone wants to open a kid-friendly/oriented business next door to Kidstock!
* We have some discount coupons for Santa Monica Pier's Pacific Park. Each coupon is good for four people to receive a wristband at $5/each. (Wristbands are normally $21/adult and $15/kid.) We only have a few coupons, and they expire Monday, January 9. If you want one and think you might be going to the Pier before Monday, come pick one up. (One per family, please.) |

Messy January Art Project
Tasty Paint Recipe
As many of you know, we at Kidstock love messy art and we especially love when the art is good enough to eat. Here is a simple project that combines it all!
Supplies: 1 can of sweetened condensed milk several drops of food coloring brushes/paper
Mix ingredients together (use empty yogurt containers so you can make several different colors.) Let the painting ensue. The "paint" will be light in color and have a glossy finish when dry.
