Kidstock

November 2010

Greetings!

Fall is officially here, but we are as confused as you are by the weather outside.  And if you visit Kidstock in November, our confusion is manifested by all the sundresses and shorts we have hanging right next to the wool sweaters and warm coats.  Seriously, we get that while this week you need a raincoat, next week you will be breaking out the t-shirts.  We are ready for ya'!

We hope that whatever shape your holiday takes -- traditional, contemporary, vegetarian, service-oriented, sports filled, or quietly thankful -- that you enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday and that health and happiness have a place at your table.

 Happy Thanksgiving!

Reminders

* We still have three very full racks of jackets.  We are adding to them daily, so if you don't see what you want, please visit again soon!

* Costumes:  After Halloween, our costumes will return to their racks by size and gender.  Don't forget to check boths sides of our store for gender-neutral items.  Pooh could appear on either the boys side OR the girls side!  And, of course, with the return of costumes to the regular racks, our popular $1 rack will be back.  See below for more info on that . . .

* We are continuing to take bags of clothing.  Please remember that we don't take stained or ripped clothing.  We are accepting small furniture items and toys now as well.  All clothing should be recently laundered and free of crud and pet hair.   We will not be taking books until January.

* Our previous newsletters are archived.  You can access them from our website at www.kidstockla.com  September's newsletter contained very detailed information about how we take clothing.  Please see that newsletter for more information about how Kidstock processes your gently used kid items.

* $1 Rack!  Our $1 rack featuring less than perfect items will be back in November.  This is a great place to find clothing for art class or for projects where disposable clothing is optimal.  Items may be slightly stained, more worn than normal, a partial outfit, or missing a button.  If you have a child who specializes in constantly forgetting his/her sweatshirt at school, then the $1 rack is a great place to find replenishments!  We add to this rack constantly, and clear it out completely about every other week.  Remember that we also have a $1 bin with fun items it in.  And right now we also have a $1 box with buttons, snaps, patches, findings, and other sewing notions.  Each $1 bag has a retail value in the $3-$8 range, so if you are a crafter or handy with a needle, please come in and get yourself a few bags!

* Holiday hours:  Starting November 1, our regular store hours are changing to Monday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm.  Kidstock will be closed Thursday, November 25.  We will be open Friday, November 26 and Saturday, November 27!

November Coupon

We are hitting the books!  For every three books purchased, get one free!  The free one will be the lowest priced one, of course.  Coupon applies to individual books only, not sets.  That's four books for the price of three!  Please bring this coupon with you to redeem.

How to Get the Most Out of Shopping Resale

At Kidstock, we try to keep our racks organized so that our customers can easily find what they need.  The following tips will help you get more out of your shopping experience with us.

 *  New stock is put out every day.  Our customers who shop weekly at Kidstock express surprise (and pleasure, we hope!) that they always find something new in their kids' sizes.

*  Always check the size section above and below your target size.  Some items have sizing tags ripped out as many kids are irritated by them.  Therefore, when we hang items, we are making an estimate as to its size.  Also, every manufacturer runs its sizes differently.  Gap, Ralph Lauren, Oilily, and Circo sizing have almost nothing in common with one another.  While one brand in a certain size may fit your child well, a different brand in that same size may not work.

*  Most of our gender-neutral or unisex items will be on the boys side of the store.  Items like cool rock band tees or green/yellow/tan colors or onesies with funny sayings will be hanging with the boys stuff.   Straight leg jeans will most likely be with the boys jeans.

* Shoes are not organized by size, but we do try to keep categories together.

Donations -- Both Ways!

Are you involved with the PTA or booster club at one of our neighborhood schools?  Kidstock is able to provide gift certificates to your preschool, school, or middle school for certain fundraising or reward incentive programs that you have.  Please email info@kidstockla.com or call us at the store during business hours.

On the other end of the spectrum, many of you when you drop off bags of clothing at Kidstock use our "donation" option on our intake form.  Do you want to know where the items we can't use go?  Good question!  Our bags of donations are usually split between a women's shelter and Goodwill.  If an item has stains or rips in it (and we are not looking to get more items like this!), most charities are not too interested.  However, we are commited to having usable clothing not end up in the landfill if we can possibly help it.  We have found several people who travel to third-world countries on a regular basis who are only too happy to have our cast-offs.  We'd like to thank these unsung heroes for their commitment to helping those who truly are less fortunate than many of us.
In this month of gentle reminders to be thankful, please know that we at Kidstock need no reminders.  We are in awe daily of the support and kindness that our customers give us.  Thank you again for being our customer and for choosing Kidstock as a place to shop.

Sincerely,

The Kidstock Team -- Melna, Leslie, Tony, and Jenny

What You Need Chopstick Pass-Along - Step 1

  • Chopsticks
  • Unshelled walnut
  • Acorn
  • Cranberry
  • Pea
  • Small plat

Instructions

This is a fun activity to do in between dinner and dessert to give your guests a chance to digest.

Give each player a set of chopsticks and place an unshelled walnut, an acorn, a cranberry, and a pea on a small plate next to the oldest player. She begins by using the chopsticks to pass each object, from largest to smallest, to the person on her right, who receives it with chopsticks and passes it along to the next player. The object is to try to get all four objects back to the starting plate without dropping any of them. Players unable to manage the chopsticks can use a teaspoon instead.  Come up with some fun "dropping" penalties such as having to do a lap around the table or an extra hug for each person at the table for each item dropped!
